SWISS SCENIC TRAINS

Glacier Express Scenic Window ViewSurely, one of the pleasures of traveling by rail in Switzerland are the scenic trains, many of them the same as regular routes with specialized panoramic view cars and tour service, while others are purely scenic rides to mountain tops. Long distance panoramic trains like the Glacier Express and Golden Pass traverse deep valleys and rise high over Alps passes, glide across the high arched viaducts across deep river gorges. The cog wheel rack trains climb the steep slopes of mountains on geared tracks to glacial ice caves and stunning mountain views. There are a range of scenic routes across the entire county to choose from. And not only trains, but some of the routes included boat rides on the magnificent lakes, or the Post Bus along steep winding roads, getting to see Switzerland’s stunning beauty from up close.

There are seven major scenic route trains and a number of excursion routes and specialized journeys by rack train or aerial cable car. The Swiss Pass is valid on nearly all of the routes with some exceptions. Some of the branded train, Postbus and boat routes require a mandatory seat reservation and a supplemental charge. Reserve well ahead for the best seating, though ticktes can be bought at any of the larger Swiss rail station travel centers. © sbr
