Bernese Oberland – Junfrau Region
The meaning is essentially the highlands of the landlords of Bern, the
Bernese Oberland or Berner Oberland takes into the lakes and Alpine
mountains to the east of Bern, the lakes of Thun and Brienz, Interlaken,
the Eiger, Monck and Jungfrau range. Cruise on the lake excursion steamers,
or sail on the turquoise waters below the high mountain peaks. Discover
charming picturesque villages of flower bedecked Swiss style Alpine
chalets and guest houses in the valleys and sunny meadows, Hang glide
right into the center of Interlaken where Lord Byron once stayed. Here
is the Junfrau Region, with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau – the
triplet of mounatin peaks which form a solid massif in the center of
Switzerland, famous names all. Rise high to the top of the Alps to
the Jungfraujoch or Schilthorn Piz Gloria, or enjoy mountain adventures
of summer and winter Kleine Scheidegg, Lauterbrunnen and Murren.
In summer - explore medieval castles, and stay in the restored grand
hotel palaces of the Belle Epoch golden days of turn of the century tourism.
Hike the hillsides into thick forests which end at the foot of steep
rocky peaks that reach to the sky while cows graze under the ancient
trees. Mountain lakes like jewels reflect towering white peaks, and above
it all reigns the majestic chain of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Explore
the mountain railways of the Jungfrau region.
In winter - the Oberland features some of the world’s best known
ski resorts areas, from Grindelwald to Gstaad, gentle cross country skiing
at Simmental and Frutigland oo the sun bathed snows of ther Hasliberg
terrace, Axalp or Beatenberg. Thrill to Ice climbing on the permanent
glacier crevaces, or soar to the mountain peak revolving restaurant of
James Bond movie fame, Piz Gloria on Schilthorn.
