LUCERNE & LAKE LUCERNE FALL 2012
Festivals &Events

When the dairy cows head back down to the valleys with jangling bells, the first mountain peaks are covered with snow, the leaves on the trees change to orange hues, and the chestnuts tumble to the ground, fall has arrived in the Lake Lucerne Region.

Fall is Festival Season

Lucerne Festival Carnival Ride Festival events are held throughout the autumn, from music to comedy, running and rowing. The Lucerne Festival, the Lucerne Blues Festival and the Blue Balls Festival attract music fans from all over the world. Other events of international note include the Fumetto Comics Festival and the Rowing World water festival on the lake. Apart from classical music, jazz and pop, Lucerne is also a venue for top-notch performances by wind ensembles. The comedy festival "Lozärn lacht" (Lucerne laughs) takes place in various locations in November. World Band Festival (Sept. 22-30) Lucerne Autumn Fair (Oct. 6-21), Cheese Festival (Oct. 13), Lucerne Marathon (Oct. 28), “Lozärn lacht” (Nov. 5-10 Nov.) and the Lucerne Blues Festival (10-18 Nov.).

Alpine Cattle Drives & Harvest Festivals

Harvest festivals are held in the Lake Lucerne Region when the summer grazing ends. Alps herdsmen guide their livestock adorned with flowers and bells down from the high Alpine meadows in that oh so Swiss quaint tradition. Enjoy this traditional, popular custom with a variety of cattle drives, fairs and markets from September through October. Fairs can be found in villages Lungern, Alpnach Dorf, Sarnen, Sachseln, and Beckenried

Suvorov Days in Muotathal

“Suvorov Days” will be held over three days September 23 to 27 for the first time in Muotathal. Reeanactments to commemorate the invasion of Russian troops into the Muota Valley under the leadership of General Suvorov in 1799. In addition, there will be numerous thematic exhibitions and activities on September 27th

Mountain Cheese

What’s the difference between Alpine and Mountain Cheese? Alpine cheese is only produced in summer with the milk from the cows, goats or sheep which graze on the Alps. Mountain cheese on the other hand is produced in village dairies from mountain regions all year round, even in Winter when the animals are in barns being fed hay. In Canton Nidwald and Canton Obwald in the autumn follow the “Cheese Trail” to a number of cheese dairies. The Walendpfad, hiking trail, and from Bannalp to Engelberg passes by Alp Oberfeld. On this goat alp, cheese is still traditionally made over open fires in copper kettles. When the weather is good the Alpine Inn is open until mid October. And check out the cheese markets: Obwald Alpine cheese market in Sarnen, November 3rd and Nidwald Alpine cheese market in Beckenried, November 17th – 18th
